President-Elect Trump is Gaslighting America December 20, 2016

I’ve blogged about Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) since 2008, long before Donald Trump descended that golden escalator in Trump Tower.

I thought I’d pretty much said all I wanted/needed to say about NPD. I put up two blog posts earlier this year noting that the consensus of numerous professionals in the mental health field is that Trump is the walking definition of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. You can read  Is Donald Trump Actually a Narcissist? Therapists Weigh In  published by Vanity Fair. (FYI: The article is in error on one thing. Narcissistic Personality Disorder does appear in the DSM-5. You have to scroll down several pages to to find it.)

Which brings me to the insightful Op-ed piece Trump is Gaslighting America by Lauren Duca that appeared last week in Teen Vogue of all places. Duca explains that gaslighting is a form of psychological abuse using manipulation.

Think of Narcissistic Personality Disorder and gaslighting as besties. What better way to keep control of the game (and yes, those with NPD look at everything as a game) than to keep other people wondering if you really meant what you said? Or if you even said it? It’s been called a crazy-making behavior because the  person with NPD deftly maintains the upper hand by using a virtual sleight of hand card trick using words instead.

Have you noticed how easily Trump, when confronted with something he said or did or promised, without hesitation denies that he ever said it? Even if there’s a video of him saying it, he shouts, “Wrong!” or changes the subject with a provocative tweet. Or dismisses it because “nobody cares about that.” I’ve watched as veteran journalists seem at a loss for how to interview someone who says whatever he needs to say in the moment and while denying things he said in the past. When you are a narcissist, yesterday is ancient history.

Clearly you misunderstood them because a Narcissist can never be at fault. Geez, are you really that ________? (fill in the blank with a derogatory word).

It’s like trying to have a conversation with a petulant child who screams, “I know you are but what am I?” Over and over and over. Asking a Narcissist for clarification or explanation just opens the door for more half truths and boldfaced lies.

Dealing with a Narcissist is exhausting. Let’s face it,  you can’t reason with crazy. But Trump’s “crazy” has a name, so please check the DSM-5s list of characteristics if you have any doubt.

Trump’s masterful ability to gaslight and distort the truth is dangerous as the goal of the Narcissist is to wear people down and eventually silence them altogether so no one will dare question them for fear of retribution and more lies. Do you really want to die on that hill?

Please read the imbedded links as it’s important to know when someone is gaslighting you or in this case the American people. It’s the first step to understanding how to get your/our voice back.

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

1stly, I have NO doubt that Chump only ran for the attention & NEVER thought in in a million years he’d win. He was all set to be the attention-whore/martyr when HRC won….Then, much to his chagrin, he won- lol. It’s not really funny, but you either laugh or shove a stake into your eye socket, amirite?

Think about it– before this, he was able to do what he wanted, when he wanted, attract NPD-supply in all forms from basically anywhere….Now? He has the SH*TTIEST job in the world! And all of his cracks are on public display!

What confounds me is JUST HOW LOW A BAR the American people have set for themselves for a POTUS? Is this mass-hysteria? Mass-stupidity? Stockholm-Syndrome? What? I mean, WTH & WTF?

Never mind Chump— WTH? Why didn’t the anti-HRC crowd complain that Sanders had been CHEATED? Illegally pushed out & then made to support Clinton? And that the DNC, SAID THEY DID SO?

FFS….AU ain’t much better, I tell ya….

Hello to the Land Down Under,
Yes, all of the above are true. And you are right, the leadership of the DNC alienated many of Sanders’ supporters (including both my sons). And yes the bar is so low that when I get out of bed each morning I trip over it. Avoiding press conferences and Tweeting allows him to be a verbal sniper and keep stirring the pot to create more drama… like on a reality show! Many people who voted for him wanted change and thought WTF. Be careful what you wish for. Just reread Animal Farm to prepare for the new year. It’s always good to hear from you. Always, Jan

Hi Jan. Had a bit-o-drama here or would have been in closer touch.

Chump— I am completely terrified. Him, the GOP idiots, all human rights abolished, country re-implementing the draft…all under this f*cking psycho! Good grief. Electoral group as pathetic as any co-dependent confronting a, NPD/BPD.

I have yet to hear of re-implementing the draft. It is clear that he has a limited attention span and is only too happy to turn over the day-to-day work of running the country to people who are as craven as he is. Jan

Many clinicians have confirmed their belief that Trump is a Narcissist, but he is actually something much worse, a severe sociopath also known as a psychopath or psychopathic personality. Few professionals ever deal directly with this type of individual and do not realize how easily the two can be confused. Like narcissists, they also can’t tolerate criticism and gaslight people, however, it has been proven that they have a visible part of their brain structure missing. I can’t tell you what the diagnosis of people you met in the past is but you can go to the article on Hare Psychopathy Checklist on the cbc.ca website to assess Trump for yourself. Trump’s oops! shrug is just part of an elaborate act. This man is pure evil and you can put Bannon in the same basket. People need to do much more than read Animal Farm. I would suggest “The Sociopath Next Door”, Evan McMullin’s 10 tweeted guidelines to resisting an authoritarian Trump, Foreign Affairs article on the fall of democracy. Happy to give you more information if you want to contact me directly.

Hi Susan,
On my blog I liken NPD to Baby Bear, Sociopaths to Mama Bear with Psychopaths as Papa Bear. There is a huge overlap as they all lack empathy and have strong narcissistic traits. A friend’s brother is a psychiatrist in Norway and two months before the election he was in a seminar on Personality Disorders. He sent her a photo he snapped during the presentation on Psychopathy which featured a photo of Trump with the diagnostic criteria alongside. It’s unfortunate because most people equate psychopaths with serial killers whereas most psychopaths actually kill your spirit. And yes, The Sociopath Next Door is an excellent read that I’ve returned to again and again. Thank you for your kind offer. Always, Jan

I have written on the topic of Trump and sociopathy. About 5 specialists have weighed in favorably. Trump in the oval office is dangerous. We all need to wake up as many people as possible to this situation. Thank you for writing this piece. B. Ashley https://twoifbycharmwordpress.wordpress.com/

It is rather ironic how we thought we’d said enough about narcissism, and then we got DJT… I guess it goes to show how important the subject is, but honestly, I can’t believe we got a full blown narcissist in the WH?!

Dogkisses! I’ve been AWOL since the election as it is indeed painful and scary to see a narcissist who is so much so that he’s literally a parody of a narcissist! I’m thinking it’s time to write a post! Great hearing from you. Always, Jan

I was in shock for a good while. Couldn’t turn on TV or read any news. Might have been better that way! Now, I’m sick of being any part of his narcissistic supply! I hope you write a post. We need ways to process the… reality.

Thanks for your reply. It’s good to hear from you as well!

There are two BIG issues with Chump:

1) Pence is super-evil, so take out DJT & that’s the next guy (w/the just-as-bad, Ryan after that) for your prez,

2) DJT is not only NPD/psychopath, he’s also a Dunning-Kruger poster boy. A toxic, mentally ill, blithering idiot in the top office of the USA!

Ryan scurried off to work for Fox News. The daily news is an assault on all that I think is right and true. Having lived in NYC during the 80’s when Trump was the tabloid poster boy, I knew that he was a hollowed out narcissist, who doesn’t give a sh*t about anyone who voted for him. It’s painful to see such a collective state of fear/denial by the Republican party in standing up to him. Invertebrates! All of them! Always, Jan

Willing to hand power over to anyone who SKIPS corrupt Pence.

Hand to Pelosi or Dems choice. Sorry- I don’t really want to but best we have.

How’d I miss this comment? Oh, that’s right….We started remodeling our house one week before the election. Since December 2016 my known world seems to have been slowly deconstructed. That said, our house is now finished. I’m hoping Trump is as well and can’t help but think that Pence knows way more than he’s letting on, or he really is Trump’s useful idiot. Fingers crossed. Always, Jan
